Fletching

Ironman AIO trains Fletching from logs it chops itself, so you don’t need any logs in the bank to start. Fletch & Drop and Fletch & Bank work from level 1 and only need a few coins for an axe and a knife. Vale Totems takes over from 20 Fletching once the Vale Totems miniquest is done.

To add one, pick Fletching in Setup, set a level range (From and To) and choose a method. The task only runs while your Fletching level is inside the range, and it’s done when you reach the To level. Fletching needs membership: on a free-to-play account the task waits with “Fletching needs members.”

Method Fletching level Needs What happens to what you make
Fletch & Drop 1 An axe and a knife (bought if you have none) Dropped
Fletch & Bank 1 An axe and a knife (bought if you have none) Banked
Vale Totems 20 The Vale Totems miniquest, a knife (picked up if you have none), and an axe while it chops Used on the totems
Any (per account) 1 Same as Fletch & Drop and Fletch & Bank Dropped or banked

Both methods chop logs, fletch them with a knife, and either drop or bank what they made. They only differ in that last step.

  1. Banking. It takes the best axe you own for your Woodcutting level, and a fletching knife or a knife. It also brings your forestry kit and log basket if you own them.
  2. Chopping. It walks to its trees and chops until the inventory is full. Bird nests that fall for you are picked up.
  3. Fletching. It uses the knife on the logs and makes the best item your level allows from them.
  4. Drop or bank.
    • Fletch & Drop drops the bows and arrow shafts once the logs are used up, then chops again. Logs you can’t fletch yet are dropped too.
    • Fletch & Bank walks to the bank with the full inventory, banks everything it made, and goes back.

It also banks once it carries 5 bird nests or Forestry items.

It chops the best tree that both your Woodcutting and your Fletching level allow:

Tree Woodcutting Fletching Notes
Normal trees 1 1
Oak 15 20
Willow 30 35
Maple 45 50 Members only, 30 combat
Yew 60 65 Members only, 30 combat

Magic logs are never used: they chop too slowly to be worth it for Fletching XP.

Fletching level Logs Makes
1 Logs Arrow shafts
5 Logs Shortbow (u)
10 Logs Longbow (u)
20 Oak logs Oak shortbow (u)
25 Oak logs Oak longbow (u)
35 Willow logs Willow shortbow (u)
40 Willow logs Willow longbow (u)
50 Maple logs Maple shortbow (u)
55 Maple logs Maple longbow (u)
65 Yew logs Yew shortbow (u)
70 Yew logs Yew longbow (u)

The bows are left unstrung.

There’s no location picker. Each account settles on its own spot for each tree, from the ones it can use, and keeps it every run.

Tree Spots
Normal trees Lumbridge, Varrock, Falador; Ardougne and Camelot (members, combat 30)
Oak Varrock, Draynor (combat 53); Ardougne and Camelot (members, combat 30)
Willow Port Sarim, Draynor (combat 15); Ardougne, Camelot and Barbarian Assault (members, combat 30)
Maple North Camelot and Camelot (members, combat 30)
Yew Camelot (members, combat 30)
  • Knife. It uses a fletching knife if you own one, otherwise a knife. With neither, it takes 10 coins from the bank and buys a knife from the Lumbridge general store.
  • Axe. It equips the best axe your Attack level allows and carries it otherwise. It buys axe upgrades as your Woodcutting level allows: up to steel always, and mithril, adamant and rune too when Upgrade axe past steel is on in Preferences.

Builds, carves and decorates the totems at the eight totem sites around Auburnvale, and fletches the decorations for them itself.

  • The Vale Totems miniquest, which needs Children of the Sun and 20 Fletching. Add it to your plan from the quest list. The planner puts it before the Fletching task, and warns you if it’s missing.
  • 20 Fletching. The task doesn’t start below 20.
  • Logs. With the Auto logs choice, enough Woodcutting to chop the wood (15 for oak), or enough of the logs in your bank.
  • A knife or fletching knife. Unlike the other two methods, Vale Totems never buys one. If you own neither, it picks up the knife that spawns in Auburnvale (banking first if the inventory is full).
  • An axe while it chops. It buys one the same way as above if you have none.

If none of your woods can be used, the task waits and tells you why, for example that no logs are owned and none can be chopped at your Woodcutting level.

It uses the best wood your Fletching level allows, as long as it can chop that wood or you own enough of its logs for a whole totem. Owned premade decorations of that wood count towards that.

Wood Fletching Woodcutting to chop it Route
Oak 20 15 Three sites only
Willow 35 30 All eight sites
Maple 50 45 All eight sites
Yew 65 60 All eight sites
Magic 80 75 All eight sites
Redwood 90 Not chopped, bank only All eight sites

Oak totems use a short route of three sites, since oak totems wear down quickly. Every other wood goes round the full loop of eight sites, clockwise.

  1. Walking. It walks to the next site on the route that still needs work. If an Ent trail appears on the way, it steps along it.
  2. Building. It builds the totem with one log of the wood.
  3. Carving. It carves the three spirit animals the site asks for. If it can’t tell which ones after a few seconds, it carves any unused animal so the totem still gets finished.
  4. Fletching. It fletches decorations from the same wood: the shortbow (u), or the longbow (u) once your level allows it. Redwood makes hiking staves from 90, and from 92 redwood shields, which take two logs each.
  5. Decorating. It places four decorations on the totem.
  6. Offerings. When a site’s offerings reach your account’s own threshold (at least 50), it claims them.

When it runs out of logs at a site, it chops the wood at the nearest trees inside the loop until the inventory, and an open log basket, are full. If your bank holds 10 or more of those logs, or 8 or more premade decorations, it goes to the bank for them instead.

It banks at whichever of the Auburnvale and Nemus Retreat banks is closer. Each trip it:

  • Takes your knife, axe (while it chops), log basket and Vale offerings.
  • Takes premade decorations of the wood, up to 16 (four totems’ worth). Any your Fletching level can use count: unstrung or strung bows, crossbow stocks and shields.
  • Takes logs. When it chops, or you own a log basket, it takes as many as fit. Otherwise it takes enough for four totems.
  • Fills your log basket, then tops the inventory up again (up to two fills a visit). A basket holding a different wood is emptied into the bank first.
  • Wears the carpenter’s outfit pieces you own, and graceful pieces in the slots they don’t cover.

Logs or decorations of a different wood, and decorations above your level, are banked.

While it chops, it keeps the log basket open so logs go straight in. At a site it empties the basket once the logs it carries run out.

Offerings. Once you own 500 or more Vale offerings, it rummages them at the bank, 500 at a time with Hasty-rummage, otherwise 100 at a time, until fewer than 100 are left. For this it carries only its tools and the offerings, so there’s room for the loot. If rummaging fails three times, it stops trying for the rest of the session.

The Logs dropdown decides where the logs come from.

  • Auto (default). Oak to magic by Fletching level, chopped around the loop. Banked logs of the wood it’s using go first.
  • Select logs. Tick the woods to use under Logs to use: Oak (20), Willow (35), Maple (50), Yew (65), Magic (80) and Redwood (90). Only those logs are taken from your bank, best first, and each wood is used until it runs out. It doesn’t chop or need an axe while they last. Once none are left, it carries on as Auto and chops. Tick at least one wood.

When Fletching reaches the To level. Logs and decorations it didn’t use stay in your bank.

Each account gets its own mix of Fletch & Drop and Fletch & Bank. It may switch from one to the other once, somewhere between level 20 and 40, and the choice is the same every run. Any never uses Vale Totems. See Account seeds for how per-account choices work.
